Sal

How to get around

Amílcar Cabral airport is the island's main port of arrival. It is only 2 kilometres from Espargos and it is very easy to reach the city from here: just take a taxi or one of the direct buses to the city centre. The locals use aluguers, minibuses that offer collective services, the price of which is set by the driver depending on the distance travelled. The best option, however, is to rent a car so you can travel independently.

Places of interest

Sal mimics the appearance of the moon, because it is arid and has no natural fresh water sources, but is characterised by enchanting beaches. Many choose to stay in Santa Maria, which features a magnificent coastline. The most typical place is Espargos, the island's capital, which stands out thanks to the bright colours of its dwellings. You must visit the Burracona natural swimming pool and Pedra do Lume, a crater filled with salt water.

Best beaches

Santa Maria is one of the main reasons why Sal has become the most popular tourist destination in Cape Verde. In fact, it features 8 kilometres of white sandy beaches, able to make anyone fall in love with it. Kite Beach is a ten-minute drive from Santa Maria, so-called because it is a kite surfing paradise. The best kitesurfers in the world come here to train and enjoy a splendid panorama. The area also houses a protected nature reserve. Shark Bay opens just north of Kite beach, which takes its name from the population of lemon sharks who dwell there, who are completely harmless. The most beautiful beach, however, is Ponta Petra, located north of Santa Maria and characterised by incredible colours.

Typical bars and restaurants

Anyone who finds themselves on Kite Beach cannot leave without visiting the Mitu & DJo Beach Club. Ponte Preta restaurant is also exceptional, where the relaxed atmosphere is enhanced by an exceptional panorama and excellent seafood dishes. The Bikini Beach Club is located on Algodoeira beach and features a sophisticated restaurant, as well as a cocktail bar and a VIP area where you can dine on sushi and champagne.
