How to get around

Most direct flights to Cape Verde land at Amilcar Babral airport on Sal Island; other airlines, also internal ones, land at the international airport of the capital Praia, Boa Vista or São Vicente. Moving between the islands is made easy via special ferries or local flights, while visitors can use minibuses, taxis and especially urban bus services to get around inland.

From wonderful beaches up to peaks reaching almost 3000 metres high, from the crystalline sea to valleys surrounded by greenery. Among the various options, the natural salt pans of Sal, the canyons of Santo Antão, the ancient crater of the Fogo volcano, the beautiful town of Mindelo in São Vicente, Cidade Velha on Santiago and the natural enchantment of the uninhabited island of Santa Luzia are all worth visiting.

The best beaches in Cape Verde

The most charming beaches worth mentioning include Praia de Chaves and Praia da Santa Monica in Boa Vista, Santa Maria (perfect for snorkelling) and Costa de Fragata (excellent for kitesurfing) in Sal, the amazing natural pool of Buracano, the São Filipe black sand beach in Fogo and the volcanic beach of Tarrafal in São Nicolau.

Visitors who want to explore the local nightlife will find many entertainment venues in Santa Maria, a city featuring many bars and various discos to spend hours of leisure. The ideal alternative is Mindelo, where very popular discos like Caravela and the Syrius Club are situated, as well as live music venues such as the Esplanada Holanda. Mindelo hosts some of the most important events during the year including the colourful and wild Carnival and the Music Festival in August.
