Boa Vista

How to get around

Flights to Boa Vista land at Aristides-Pereira international airport. The airport is only located 5 kilometres from the capital city of Sal Rei, which is very easy to reach thanks to the large number of shuttles and taxis heading into the city. Numerous buses depart Sal Rei for the main tourist destinations on the island every day (especially in the morning). Alternatively, considering the manageable scale of Boa Vista, you can opt for a rental car or quad, especially recommended to the more adventurous visitors.

Places of interest

Sal Rei is a small city brimming with little handicraft shops and typical restaurants. The city has a pleasant atmosphere, which is relaxing and never rowdy. Visitors should not miss out on the small island located a short distance from the shore, which houses the ruins of an ancient watchtower. Those who appreciate simple things in life will be drawn to the authenticity of this place. In addition, Bofareira, Curral Velho (an abandoned and uninhabited village), Joao Galego, Estância de Baixo, Rabil (the ancient capital) and Povoação Velha are all must-see places. However, no visitor should miss participating in one of the many excursions to the Viana desert. While it is not very extensive, the desert is picturesque like no other. Here, the winds have shaped the sand creating splendid dunes interspersed with splashes of vegetation and volcanic rocks.

Best beaches

Santa Monica beach is situated in Curralinho, in the south of the island. It is often compared to the most picturesque stretches of coast in California and Australia, thanks to the white sand and its extraordinary scale: it measures over 18 kilometres and encounters turquoise waters populated by dozens of loggerhead turtles. Do not miss De Chaves beach, about ten kilometres south of Sal Rei, famous for its tall white sand dunes.

Typical bars and restaurants

There is no shortage of restaurants and bars in Boa Vista. Do not miss the beach parties, especially if they are organised by Bahia Beach, Morabeza or the Social Club. As for restaurants, the most popular options are Chandinho, Cabo Cafè and Cafè del Mar.
