Getting around Almaty

Flights to Almaty land at the Almaty International Airport, which is located a short distance from the city itself. There are several ways to get there. One of the cheapest and most convenient is by taxi, which is also one of the most popular means of transport in the area. Another way to get from the airport to Almaty is by bus. There is a bus line that runs every ten minutes and can take you to the Aerovokzal district. Once in the city there are several bus routes, but also a metro network that connects the downtown areas to the more peripheral ones and some parks.

What to visit in Almaty

During your walk, don't forget to walk along the Zhybek Zoly boulevard, frequented by local artists and full of shops. Also worth visiting are the Kasteev Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Musical Instruments, the Abai Kazakh Opera House and the Panfilov Park. At the top of Kok Tobe Hill you can enjoy a splendid view of the city from above and enjoy the unspoilt nature of Kazakhstan. For a relaxing break, however, you could unwind at one of the many historic spas dotted around the area, such as the Arasan Spa. So many places to visit!

Where to eat

If you seek out the traditional restaurants or street food stalls, which are very popular, you will also get to know the country through its flavours. Many of Kazakhstan's traditional recipes are based on rice and meat. Some of the traditional dishes to try are the Beshmarak, made mainly from horse meat, or the Plov, a dish of Uzbek origin reworked according to Kazakh customs.
