Getting around Mauritius

Flights to Mauritius land at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. It is located a short distance from Port Louis, the country's capital, and is also well connected to some of its main destinations. For example, the airport is connected to the city by a bus journey on the 198 line, which takes just over an hour to reach the destination. The 198 is also the ideal bus to reach the town of Mahebourgh, along with lines 9 and 10. The latter is also perfect for reaching Rivière des Gallets in the south of the island. Buses are very frequent, but you can also get around by hiring a car or taking a taxi.

What to visit in Mauritius

There are many things to see in Mauritius during your trip. If you love nature and hiking, a visit to the Black River Gorges is an experience not to be missed. It is the largest national park in Mauritius and holds a treasure trove of biodiversity to be discovered. Some three hundred different plant species are found here, as well as macaques, flying foxes, wild boar and deer, and you can admire the seven Tamarin waterfalls. There are a number of paths to be followed within it, of varying difficulty. Some, shorter ones, are also suitable for the less experienced. Another stop that you absolutely must include in your itinerary is in the Black River district, in the south-west of the island: here, you will find the Lands of Chamarel, also known as the 'Lands of the Seven Colours'. A geological phenomenon has led the area to have seven different and very bright colours, which are a spectacle up close.

What about the cities? The capital city of Port Luis is beautiful and full of things to see. Among its main attractions are Fort Adelaide and the Central Market, where you will find many unique pieces of local handicrafts. Stroll along Place de Armes and immerse yourself in the daily life of the city. Another thing to do in Mauritius is to visit one of its many spice, tea or sugar plantations. Last, but certainly not least, are the beaches of the Mauritius archipelago: idyllic shores where white sand meets a colorful sea. Perhaps the most famous beach is the one at Flic En Flac, a small tropical oasis. The tip of the Le Morne peninsula is particularly appreciated not only for the unspoilt nature that surrounds its beaches, but also for the spectacle of the large underwater waterfall that can be admired from the top of the promontory.

This, and the great passage of spices from all over the world, has made its typical cuisine incredibly rich. Many are made with rice and chicken, accompanied by hearts of palm or drizzled with honey.
