Lisbon is a wonderful city: modern and multicultural, welcoming and rich in history, charming and poetic. Portugal's capital is rich in history and offers spectacular sceneries, also thanks to the white stone streets that almost seem to glow in the sun in summer. The city is characterised by its picturesque neighbourhoods, such as Alfama and Bairro Alto, where you can stroll through the cobbled streets and admire the city's typical colourful, often tiled or pastel-coloured houses. The majestic St. George's Castle dominates the city and offers an extraordinary panoramic view. On a trip to Lisbon, you can enjoy the excellent local cuisine or escape to one of the many live music venues and listen to Fado, Portugal's most traditional musical genre.

Getting around Lisbon

Flights to Lisbon land at the international airport of the same name. After arriving at your destination, there are several ways to travel to the city. A convenient alternative is to take the airport bus, which offers frequent connections to the centre of the capital. Getting around Lisbon is very easy: trams are very frequent. You can take the famous historical trams, such as tram 28, which runs through the city's most picturesque districts. Lisbon city taxis are very cheap and one of the most popular means of transport for travellers.

Among Lisbon's traditional dishes, you can't miss the famous pastéis de nata: an exquisite pastry filled with traditional cream. Delicious fresh from the oven, creamy and mouth-watering, this pastry is a must-have on your list of things to eat in the city. Among the things to eat in Lisbon are cod dishes, very popular throughout the country. The bacalhau à brás (made with cod, potatoes, eggs and onions), for instance, is not to be missed; but sopa de pedra, a soup of beans and pork, is also a very popular dish and one not to be missed. Portuguese soups are famous: also try the 'caldo verde', a cabbage soup full of flavour. For fish lovers, there is octopus a la lagareiro and seafood cataplana, both succulent and tasty dishes. Lisbon also offers traditional desserts such as queijadas, fresh cheese sweets, and travesseiros de Sintra, sweets filled with egg and almond cream. It is impossible to travel to Lisbon without sipping Ginjinha, also known as Ginja: the typical black cherry liqueur that everyone drinks. Stop by one of the many kiosks that liven up the centre, choose whether to fill your glass with fruit or just liquor, and get ready to taste a delicious liqueur!
