How to get around

Flights to Holguin, Cuba land at the international airport of the city of Holguin, located 13 kilometres from the centre. You can get around the province using hired cars, taxis, public buses, tourist buses or internal flights. The trains are less efficient.

What to see

There are many attractions to choose from to best enjoy your holiday. The must-sees in Holguin are the Catedral de San Isidoro in Parque Peralta, the Museo de Historia Provincial in Parque Calixto Garcia and Plaza de la Marqueta. A walk on the hill Loma de la Cruz is also recommended. In Gibara, the noteworthy locations are the Batería Fernando VII Fort, Iglesia de San Fulgencio and the Caverna de Panaderos, while in Guardalavaca you should visit the Chorro de Maita Museum. The Bariay National Park, Bioparco Rocazul, Sierra del Cristal and the archaeological sites of Banes are also splendid.

The best beaches in Holguin

The main seaside resort in the province is Guardalavaca, a true tropical paradise surrounded by gentle, green hills, with beaches of fine sand and crystal-clear waters. The best beaches include Playa Pesquero and Playa Esmeralda, ideal for snorkelling, and the nearby Playa Blanca. Playa Puerto Rico and Playa de Morales in Banes are also quiet and quite beautiful.

Dining and entertainment suggestions

Some of the best clubs, including cafés and discos, are located directly in Holguin: they include the Disco Havana Club, the Disco Cristal and the Cabaret Nuevo Nocturno. An excellent evening is also guaranteed at Casa de la Trova, with live Cuban music played by great musicians. The trendiest place in Banes is Cafe Cantante. The province has numerous fast food offers and restaurants specializing in Caribbean cuisine, seafood and in some cases also Chinese food. The most interesting annual events are the Cinema Povero Festival in Gibara (April), the Holguin Carnival (August) and Romerias de Mayo (May) in Holguin with parties and concerts.
