The southern coast of Porto Santo is a 6 km long beach of fine, golden sand that runs from Ponta da Calheta, an area renowned for its sunsets, to the quay of the Porto Santo sailing club. The rest of the coast is high and rocky, but in some places you can reach small quiet coves like Praia do Zimbralinho. A trip to Portugal must include a visit to Lisbon. Throw yourself into its intricate alleyways and walk through its elegant and majestic streets. Climb the hills to admire the view from a miradouro (viewpoint) and stop to enjoy the white light of the city in a garden or on the banks of the Tagus. The intense and melancholy atmosphere of the Portuguese capital will captivate you. One place that is certainly worth a visit is the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, which was commissioned by King Manuel I to celebrate the discovery of the route to the East and decorated with statues depicting sea monsters, corals, ships and refined tunnels. The monastery is the best example of late Portuguese Gothic.

The Palacio da Pena of Sintra is a fairytale castle in pastel colours, which Ferdinand II had built out of a desire to create a palace worthy of an opera scene. In the Parque natural do Sudoeste Alentejano and Costa Vicentina, which stretches over 100 km of coastline from Porto Covo in Alentejo to Burgau in the Algarve, the landscape is characterised by steep cliffs, which erosion has carved into suggestive shapes, long sandy beaches and small coves nestled between the rocks. In Porto, stop for a glass of wine on the Ribeira, the quay along the Douro river, with its picturesque nooks and outdoor tables. Then cross the Dom Luis I bridge and continue on the left bank of the river to visit the cellars where the Port wine is produced and aged.
