Marsa Matrouh

How to get around

The capital of the Matrouh Governorate is served by an airport located in the southern suburbs of the city, a few kilometres away from the centre and the main tourist destinations. There's no lack of shuttles and taxis, so visitors can easily reach the hotels and resorts. The same hotels offer direct minibuses to the beaches and the most fascinating sites in the surrounding area.

Places of interest

Also known as the Caribbean of Egypt, this stretch of coast offers several sites belonging to a very ancient past. However, Marsa Matrouh is especially renowned for its natural beauty, surrounded as it is by over seven kilometres of rocks that protect it from the currents, giving an amazing appearance to the waters that bathe it. The remains of an ancient anchor used by the naval fleets of the Tolomei era lie not far from the inhabited centre. Nearby there is also a beautiful Coptic chapel and the famous Rommel Museum, housed inside the cave where Erwin Rommel, a German general, settled his headquarters. The museum displays tools, weapons and military uniforms from the era. Finally, don't miss the oasis of Siwa, situated in the middle of the desert, with the adjacent fortress of Shali and the pool of Cleopatra.

Best beaches

Rommel beach blends history and nature. In fact, it is here that the "Desert Fox" situated his headquarters. Gharam beach is also very beautiful, distinguished by its pale tones. The best-known beach, however, is that of Cleopatra, located inside a small bay, characterised by waters ranging from turquoise to emerald green. Legend tells us that Cleopatra and Marco Antonio used to swim there.

Typical bars and restaurants

One of the best restaurants in Marsa Matrouh is Kamona, which specialises in meat dishes. In the same area (Almaza Bay), Corallo Sea Food stands out, known for its "thousand and one nights" atmosphere. Finally, don't miss Morgana and Sofra.
